Word problems
Turn words into math with the Guide me style: pick out what you know, ask for a hint when you're stuck, and solve a money problem from start to finish.
Set up the session
Word problems work brilliantly with the Guide me learning style: the tutor asks questions that teach you how to read the problem.
Open the Setup Wizard
In the tutor lobby, choose Setup Wizard at the top (or Customize). The wizard builds a focused session in four quick steps.
Pick your level — Build on Basics
Build on Basics revisits foundations, Advanced (recommended) works at grade level, and Expert moves faster with harder problems. Then press Continue.
Choose how you learn — Guide me
Direct gets to the point, Step-by-step explains every move, In-depth adds the why behind each idea, and Guide me teaches through questions.
Choose Math, then the focus area — Arithmetic
Select Math. A Focus area in Math row appears (General Math, Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Statistics, Probability and more). Picking one keeps every explanation, example and practice question on that topic.
Pick a buddy and start
Choose a learning buddy — Sage is calm and methodical, a favourite for math — then press Start Session.
Solve a money problem
- Notebooks3 × $2.50 = $7.50Multiply quantity by price.
- Total$7.50 + $1.25 = $8.75Add the pen.
- Change$10.00 − $8.75 = $1.25Subtract the total from the amount paid.
Paste the whole problem
Include every number and the question at the end.
Try it“Sam buys 3 notebooks at $2.50 each and a pen for $1.25. He pays with a $10 bill. How much change does he get?”Stuck? Ask for a hint
A hint is a nudge, not the answer — so you still do the thinking.
Try it“I'm stuck. Can you give me a hint?”Work it through and check
Send your full working. The tutor confirms each step and recaps the plan: understand → plan → solve → check.
Try it“3 × 2.50 = 7.50, plus 1.25 is 8.75. So the change is 10 − 8.75 = $1.25?”
Keep learning
Arithmetic & fractions
Set up an arithmetic session and add fractions with different denominators — finding a common denominator, converting, adding and simplifying, then practising.
Ways to learnHomework help: snap a photo, check your work
Photograph your homework, choose Check work, and the tutor reads your handwriting, confirms what's right, finds the exact line with a mistake, and helps you fix it yourself.
Ways to learnQuick actions: simpler, different method, example, quiz
Every answer comes with one-tap buttons. Learn what each does — Give me an example, Try different approach, Explain simpler, Quiz me, practice, Summarize, Copy, Read aloud and Try again.
